Syllabus for Elementary Computer Science Methods

Course Description: 

Required for the Computer Science endorsement. Will prepare you to teach computer science in Elementary/Middle schools.

 

Course Materials: 

All necessary course material is posted online at: www.azteacher.net/ottawa.

 

Course Objectives: 

Instruction and practice will focus on:

·        Use of Microsoft Office Applications

·        Integration of technology into the elementary school curriculum

·        Using web-based resources

·        Sharing of ideas for student projects

 

Course Methods and Procedures: 

Students will be guided through a variety of hands-on activities that will give them the skills necessary to design lesson plans using a variety of Microsoft applications. 

 

Course Outline:

  • Day 1 – Review ways to use the Internet as a resource for covering the State Elementary Education Curriculum Standards.
  • Day 1a – Review ways to use Microsoft Word to complete lessons that cover a variety of State Elementary Education Curriculum Standards.
  • Day 2 – Review ways to use Microsoft PowerPoint to complete lessons that cover a variety of State Elementary Education Curriculum Standards.
  • Day 2a – Review ways to use Microsoft FrontPage, Internet Explorer and Excel to complete lessons that cover a variety of State Elementary Education Curriculum Standards.

 

 

Evaluation/Outside Project:

Students will be evaluated on participation and completion of the in-class practice assignments. Twelve hours of additional practice and an outside project are required. The student with the approval of the Instructor will select the content of the project. It should include 12 hours of combined practice and project, and must be submitted by disk or e-mail within 1 week of completion of course. A rubric for evaluation of the project will be provided to the participants during class.
